Where is this “spring” that silly little groundhog was talking about?
We’ve been feeling the cabin fever in a big way lately, and I really can’t wait for spring to arrive! The winter months can definitely make a new mom feel a bit trapped, and I’m daydreaming about flowers, fresh air, mud puddles, and warm sunshine. Yesterday, I decided to forget that the weather was gloomy and still below zero, and busted out some pastel and floral pattern decor to help bring spring inside.
And what better way to celebrate the arrival of indoor spring (oh boy, I’m really losing it) than to throw myself a little ‘lactation staycation’? After my sweet boy settled in for his first nap of the day, I poured myself some Mother’s Milk tea and whipped up a quick batch of no-bake energy/lactation balls.
These balls are a little bit naughty and a little bit nice. Naughty, well… because of the chocolate. And nice, because they have lots of healthy mix-ins like flax, chia seeds, and oats. You can make these balls in less than 15 minutes, and they are unbelievably yummy. They are basically guilt-free oatmeal chocolate chip cookie dough.
As a bonus, flaxseed and oats are considered to be galactagogues, which can help boost lactation in breastfeeding women. Of course, these balls are equally amazing for formula feeding moms and moms of older kids because they are a healthy, protein packed, energy boosting snack. What momma couldn’t use an energy boost?
No Bake Energy/Lactation Balls
2 cups Large flake oats
3/4 cup Chunky peanut butter
1/2 cup Ground flax seed
1/2 cup Maple syrup
1/2 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 scoop Vanilla protein powder
1 tbsp Qia cereal (chia seeds, hemp seeds, buckwheat combo)
1 1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
1 tsp Vanilla extract
Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix until very well combined.
Using your hands, grab small pieces of the mixture and form it into balls. Each ball is roughly 1.5 tbsp of the mixture.
Place balls into an airtight container and refrigerate or freeze. Makes approximately 20 balls.
